Writing Up Research
LearnResearch MethodologyUnit 411

Topic 4.11 of Writing Up Research

Preparing Presentations and Posters

Research results are communicated in two formats beyond the written paper: a conference talk (10–15 minutes with slides) and a research poster (A0 landscape, displayed at a conference session). Both require different design thinking than a written report.

~25 min total·4 quadrants of structured content

By the end of this topic, you will

  • Structure a 12-minute conference talk across its sections and allocate time to each section correctly
  • Apply the one-idea-per-slide rule to convert a dense methods section into a sequence of clear slides
  • Design a research poster that can be read in 90 seconds and still communicate the core result
  • Prepare for Q&A by anticipating the three most likely questions and practising graceful responses to questions outside the study's scope

Preparing Presentations and Posters

A conference talk is not a paper read aloud, and a research poster is not a paper printed large. Both require translating your research into a format designed for a different kind of attention — shorter, more visual, and competing with everything else in the room.
